Lung conditions (non-cancerous)
Thoracic Surgeons at University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview, are widely recognized experts in evaluating and diagnosing non-cancerous lung conditions including: - Diaphragm paralysis
- Emphysema/COPD
- Pleural effusion (a buildup of fluid between the layers of tissue that line the lungs and chest cavity)
- Pneumothorax (lung collapse)
- Pulmonary nodules*
Surgical procedures to treat these conditions may include:
- Laparoscopic diaphragm placation (provides the lung with greater volume for expansion)
- Lung volume reduction surgery or bullectomy
- Thoracentesis (removal of fluid from the space between the lungs and the chest wall)
- Placement of pleural drainage catheters
- Thoracoscopic pleurodesis (procedure that adheres the outside of the lung to the inside of the chest cavity to prevent the lung from collapsing again)
- Thoracoscopic lung biopsy
* We’ve a dedicated clinic and multi-specialty care team to diagnose and treat pulmonary lung nodules.
