Pancreas and Biliary

The Fairview Difference
University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview, provides world-class care for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases associated with the pancreas, bile duct and gall bladder. When you choose to receive your care with us, you’re not only seeing doctors, but also researchers who work across the boundaries of our specialties to collaborate on treatment plans and come up with original solutions to medical conditions.

In addition to treating simple conditions such as gallstones, our team of pancreas and biliary specialists holds weekly conferences at the University of Minnesota where we discuss complex cases and share experimental treatments for more advanced conditions, such as pancreatic cancer and chronic pancreatitis. Our broad experience means you can have great confidence in us.

If you have several digestive health related conditions, we make it easy for you to see our team of experts. These specialists are all located in one clinic, so patients like you can make one appointment to see a team of experts. And our teams work together to offer the highest level of comprehensive care to each one of our patients.

Why can you rely on us?
We are known worldwide for our transplant programs for the liver, pancreas and islet cells. For new treatment research and technologies, we’re a national leader. Our transplant center boasts many early achievements, including pioneering the first total pancreatectomy and auto islet transplant (TPIAT) procedure. And the medical center is one of only four institutions in the U.S. to be awarded a grant for our pancreatic research.

Pancreatic cancer
As a global leader in forging new ways to diagnose and treat pancreatic cancer, we are one of only four institutions in the United States to be awarded a Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE) grant for our pancreatic cancer research. This means our patients, people just like you, have the opportunity to work with some of the best doctors in the country when it comes to preventing, slowing or treating this particularly difficult cancer.

Diagnosing pancreatic cancer can be very challenging and once found, it can be even harder to treat. University of Minnesota Physicians experts offer leading-edge treatment options based on academic medicine and research, done right here at University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview. When caught early, we use advanced minimally invasive techniques, such as the whipple procedure, along with any combination of radiation and chemotherapy. That approach improves outcomes and offers better quality of life. We also offer clinical trial opportunities to patients who qualify.
