Guiding women through complicated pregnancy

Patients must be referred to Maternal-Fetal Medicine Centers by their primary care physician. Physicians may call 800-MFM-FOR-U (800-636-3678) or complete a referral form. Referral form for physicians.

Are you experiencing complications in your pregnancy, or are you at risk of experiencing a medically complicated pregnancy? Expecting multiple babies? Do you have a family history of birth defects or genetic conditions? Talk with your doctor about a referral to our clinic.

Maternal-Fetal Medicine Centers offer expert, compassionate care for pregnant women and their unborn babies. Board-certified maternal-fetal medicine specialists (formerly called perinatalogists) collaborate with neonatologists, geneticists and other pediatric specialists to provide the highest level of care for moms and their babies. We have the only perinatal clinics in Minnesota that are part of the University of Minnesota National Center Of Excellence in Women’s Health.

We understand you value your relationship with your primary care provider or obstetrician. In many instances you’re able to continue your care with him or her, and deliver your baby at your local hospital. There are times, though, your provider may recommend that you transfer your prenatal care to us: to the Perinatal Assessment and Consultative Center for care of maternal conditions, or the Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment Center if you receive a test result or ultrasound indicating a possible concern in your developing baby. You can depend on our specialists to provide the highest level of critical care and support for the best possible outcome for your pregnancy.

For parents with a personal or family history of certain genetic conditions, or with a history of difficult pregnancies, our genetic counselors can help provide you with a better understanding of possible testing options during your pregnancy.

Why us?

• You will receive the highest level of medical care; all of our physicians and genetic counselors are board certified, and our sonographers are all certified in first trimester screening.

• Our compassionate, caring approach means our staff takes the time to listen to your concerns, and fully explain your condition and treatment options.

• Our physicians regularly collaborate with other sub-specialists, such as cardiologists, radiologists, neonatologists, social workers and more, to discuss patient care and treatments.

• Because we are part of an academic health center, our doctors read—and write—the newest literature, so they’re up to date.

• Care is “evidence-based,” which means it’s been tested and proven by the experts.

Steps away from The Birthplace is the Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at University of Minnesota Amplatz Children’s Hospital. A Level IV NICU provides the highest level of neonatal care available. Specialized staff cares for newborns with any condition that compromises their well-being.

A comprehensive range of care and treatment
At Maternal-Fetal Medicine Centers, we work to achieve superior health outcomes for high-risk mothers and their babies while working closely with patients’ primary care providers and obstetricians. This starts with preconception care and continues through postpartum care. You can consult with a subspecialist, arrange co-management of the pregnancy or transfer the care of patients requiring more intensive monitoring and care to our Perinatal Assessment and Consultative Center or Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment Center. Our multidisciplinary team is able to offer expertise from a broad spectrum of sub-specializations, available only at a comprehensive academic medical center.

We sincerely thank you for your referrals and appreciate your confidence in allowing us to share in the care of your patients. Our physicians are committed to timely, ongoing communication with you, including regular patient status reports.
