Gamma Knife
Patients with brain tumors, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) and functional brain disorders have new hope. University of Minnesota Physicians and community physicians use the Gamma Knife, located at University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview to control abnormalities that are too deep within the brain or too near delicate structures and blood vessels to reach with a scalpel. The treatment is effective, and decreases pain, length of recovery and the risk of complications compared to conventional neurosurgery.
University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview is the only place in the Twin Cities to offer Gamma Knife stereotactic radiosurgery, often used instead of or in addition to conventional surgery for a wide variety of brain problems. Gamma Knife is a non-invasive outpatient procedure in which a high dose of radiation is focused on a small target within the brain.
