The Neurology Clinic applies well-rounded assessments, treatments and lifestyle support for the varied diseases and conditions associated with neurological function. We provide care for Alzheimer’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), ataxia, headaches (cephalgia), memory issues, movement disorders, multiple sclerosis (MS), muscular dystrophy (MD), neuromuscular disease, neuropathy, Parkinson's disease, seizure disorders, and stroke.
Alzheimer’s Disease
Our multidisciplinary team of experts helps you and your family understand and manage this neurodegenerative disease. While no cure currently exists for Alzheimer’s, your individualized care team will develop a treatment plan to alleviate symptoms and increase livability.
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is treated at the Neurology Clinic, along with the University of Minnesota’s Paul and Sheila Wellstone ALS Clinic, with an attuned approach. In managing this disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, we apply multidisciplinary care to create best possible outcomes.
Ataxia
It is our goal to manage coordination issues related to your particular disease or condition using the latest in available treatments. We provide drug and physical therapy to help you better cope with your ataxia/movement disorders associated with multiple sclerosis, stroke, brain tumor, heat stroke, or infection.
Electroencephalogram and Electromyogram (EEG and EMG)
EEGs and EMGs are innovative diagnostic tests used to assess epilepsy as well as muscle, nerve and neuromuscular disease. By recording and analyzing electrical activity of the brain, muscles and nerves, the care team at the Neurology Clinic can identify and determine a course of treatment most effective for you.
Headaches (Cephalgia)
While common, headaches (cephalgia), primary or secondary, can greatly affect your quality of life. Our team at the Neurology Clinic will assess your headache type and severity through a personal assessment of patterns, family history, triggers and other factors. Your individualized treatment plan will then be designed to manage your personal condition and needs.
Memory
The Memory Clinic is devoted to evaluating and treating memory and cognitive problems along with their related behavior changes. Because dementia is more than a medical condition, we are committed to providing the best treatment for both individuals and families in the medical, psychological and social arenas.
Epilepsy
The Comprehensive Epilepsy Center offers unsurpassable, multidisciplinary care in addressing epilepsy. Our world-class care team considers comprehensive treatment options for patients of all ages with any type of epilepsy or seizure disorder.
Movement Disorders
Many brain diseases produce abnormal movements. Using a highly integrated approach, our expert, multidisciplinary team evaluates patients to find the optimal medication and/or surgical approach for managing their movement disorders. We provide the highest quality care, applying clinical research, novel therapies and cutting-edge technologies.
Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
The Multiple Sclerosis Center offers innovative, compassionate care including long-term immunotherapy, treatment of acute relapses, symptom management, onsite rehabilitation, and physical therapy services. All members of our multidisciplinary care team are dedicated to the diagnosis and management of MS and its diverse complications.
MS is a complex disease prompting patients and their families to have many questions and concerns. Because of this, we’ve dedicated a MS nurse coordinator to answer questions and coordinate ongoing care.
Likewise, our MS specialists define and provide solutions to your specific conditions and concerns. Beyond this, patients benefit from the Center’s ties to academic medicine, from which we continue to apply new knowledge and clinical trial options.
Muscular Dystrophy (MD)
The Muscular Dystrophy Clinic diagnoses and treats MD along with the Paul and Sheila Wellstone Muscular Dystrophy Center, providing you with the latest in innovative care and continual information and support.
There is no cure or treatment to halt the progression of MD. However, recent research on gene and molecular therapy is creating new possibilities.
Currently, the disease may be slowed with medical management (steroids) and its symptoms managed through:
- Orthopaedic devices
- Orthopaedic surgery
- Physical therapy and exercise
Based on their individual treatment plan, patients have the opportunity to work with:
- Genetic counselors
- Neurologists
- Nurse clinicians
- Occupational therapists
- Physical therapists
- Speech therapists
Neuromuscular Disease
At the Neurology Clinic, we use a comprehensive approach to diagnosing and designing treatment programs for neuromuscular diseases. Our care is both innovative and compassionate, provided by an expert multidisciplinary team.
Neuropathy
The Neuropathy Clinic provides multidisciplinary care for the management of neuropathy. We strive to simplify the often bewildering diagnosis of this disease of the nerves, often associated with diabetes, which causes numbness, pain and weakness in patients.
While neuropathy is most often related to diabetes (in the U.S.), its onset can also be traced to numerous other causes – and in some cases, there is no known cause. Because of this, we at the Neuropathy Clinic use a full spectrum of diagnostic tools in assessing your condition along with a comprehensive examination in determining your individualized treatment plan.
Likewise, we take full advantage of the multispeciality resources of University of Minnesota Physicians working with…
- Genetic testing and counselors
- Health counselors
- Pain management specialists
- Rehabilitation services
Along with this, we are continually involved with the latest in clinical research and access the most innovative treatments through the University of Minnesota’s world-class academic medicine.
Parkinson's Disease
Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological disease characterized by four primary symptoms: rigidity, slowness or absence of movement, tremor, poor balance and coordination. If medications are no longer effective, patients with Parkinson’s are ideal candidates for neurosurgery treatments which may provide substantial benefit.
Seizure Disorders
Seizures occur when electrical impulses discharge abnormally and the brain is not able to communicate with the spinal cord, nerves and muscles, or within itself. The multidisciplinary team at the Neurology Clinic takes a comprehensive approach in assessing and determining a best-treatment course for your particular seizure disorder.
Stroke
The Neurology Clinic, in collaboration with the Stroke Center, a national leader in development and implementation of innovative stroke services, provides expert education and prevention as well as care using the latest in clinical services. The Stroke Center offers a full range of acute, inpatient and after-care services.
