Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I have a problem?

Some of the signs that an alcohol or drug problem may exist are:

  • Taking more of the substance to get the desired euphoric effect
  • Feeling guilty about your use
  • Family or friends expressing concern about your use
  • Using interferes with normal activities including time with family or friends, work, or hobbies
  • Legal consequences resulting from using
  • Continued use in spite of recurring consequences
  • Failed promises to cut down or quit
  • Frequent hangovers or experiencing shakiness after a period of heavy drinking

What is the first step to getting help?

The first step to getting help is to determine if you have a substance use problem and what type of help would best meet your needs. This is done by having an assessment. An assessment performed by a qualified Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor can determine if you have a substance abuse or dependence problem; if you need treatment and what type of treatment would be best for you. You can schedule an appointment with Fairview by calling 612-672-2736.

What are the different types of treatment?

There are basically three types of treatment. Inpatient is usually medical in nature and addresses issues such as detoxification and medical stabilization. This is usually a short stay of 3 – 5 days and will almost always involve a referral for further treatment. Residential treatment is for individuals who are medically stable but require a setting away from their typical environment. Usually residential treatment is recommended for persons who have a history of not being able to maintain abstinence from alcohol or drugs for any length of time; have a history of using substances while in an outpatient program; have life situations or stressors that require the safety and intensity that a residential program offers or lack a stable home environment that is supportive of recovery. Residential treatment is usually a 21 day program. Outpatient treatment is usually recommended for individuals who have a history of abstaining from substance use; have an attitude that is conducive to an outpatient setting and have a safe and supportive environment. Outpatients usually follow their normal living routine and attend treatment in the evening for a few hours a few days a week for several weeks. Daytime options are available also.

What does treatment do?

The goal of treatment is to help an individual discover how chemical use has affected their life; look at life areas that may present a risk to recovery and help establish a lifestyle that will enable recovery from addiction. This is done through careful assessment, the development of an individualized treatment plan and group and individual counseling. After completion of the initial treatment phase, the individual enters Phase II Recovery Management. This is a weekly supportive group that helps the individual maintain recovery goals that are determined by the treatment plan.

What is dual-diagnosis?

Dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder is when an individual has both a substance abuse and mental health diagnosis. The most common mental health diagnosis is depression followed by anxiety disorder and bi-polar disorder. While in a treatment program that offers dual diagnosis treatment both issues will be addressed.

How successful is treatment?

The recovery rates for treatment are not easy to determine. Many factors go into a profile of who attains recovery and who may struggle. There is no exact percentage. We do know that people who comply with recommendations made during treatment and follow a recovery program that extends beyond treatment do tend to have positive outcomes.
