The University of Minnesota will host its fifth annual survivorship conference, “Survivorship Series: Moving Beyond Cancer,” from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., April 10 at the McNamara Alumni Center, 200 Oak St. S.E. in Minneapolis. The free conference, which features speakers, break-out sessions and the opportunity to learn about cancer-survivor services, focuses on questions and issues survivors and their families may face after cancer treatment or following stem cell transplantation.

PAUL (April 20, 2009) - Researchers at the Masonic Cancer Center, University of Minnesota have discovered a direct link between a cancer-causing compound in tobacco and the development of lung cancer in some smokers. This is the first time a direct link between smoking and lung cancer in humans has been identified.

Six annual screenings for prostate cancer led to more diagnoses of the disease, but not fewer prostate cancer deaths, according to a new major report from the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial. U of M is the largest site for this national prostate cancer screening trial.

The University of Minnesota has received a $40 million pledge for diabetes research from the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation. Goals for the funding, to be paid over five years, are to capitalize on the University's strength in diabetes research and to accelerate the timeline to translate it into a viable cure for people with type 1 diabetes.
